Shine Bright This Hanukkah

As we approach Hanukkah, we’re reminded of its timeless message: that a small spark of determination can grow into something bright and powerful. Even when the world feels complicated, Hanukkah encourages us to gather, celebrate, and lift each other up with light and joy.

The powerful story of Hanukkah: the Maccabees' unwavering faith and their triumph against overwhelming odds is a story of resilience, dedication, and the miracles that inspire us to unite, find strength, and bring light to the world.

Hanukkah, meaning “dedication,” commemorates two miracles:

• the small band of Maccabees defeating the mighty Greek army,
• and the sacred oil in the Temple menorah that lasted eight days when it seemed there was only enough for one.

The holiday’s central ritual, lighting the Hanukkiah (the Hanukkah Menorah), honors these miracles and serves as a reminder of the light we carry within ourselves.

This year, Hanukkah begins at sundown on Sunday, December 14, and ends at sundown on Monday, December 22.

The Light of Hanukkah in Our Lives Today

The candles of Hanukkah shine as beacons of love, courage, and wisdom. They remind us that even one small light can dispel great darkness and that together, we can illuminate the world with kindness and hope.

The Hanukkiah’s nine candles include eight for each miraculous night and the Shamash, the “helper” candle, used to light the others. The Shamash symbolizes how we can serve as helpers and leaders, working together to bring more light into the world.

Of all the Jewish holidays, the story of Hanukkah is the one that embodies all of our Beber Camp Jewish values in action.

• Courage (Ometz Lev): Like the Maccabees, we encourage stepping out of comfort zones, whether trying new activities at camp or standing up for one’s beliefs.
• Leadership (Manhigut): The Maccabees’ leadership inspires us to nurture young leaders who can make hard decisions and act with integrity.
• Sacred Community (Kehillah Kedosha): Just as the Maccabees rededicated the Temple and brought their community together, we foster a nurturing, inclusive environment for exploring Jewish practices and values.
• Love of Israel (Ahavat Yisrael): The Maccabees’ deep connection to the land and its sacredness mirrors our dedication to fostering love for Israel through our programs, Israeli staff, and Israel trip.
• Gratitude (Hakarat Hatov): The Maccabees showed gratitude in their prayers and actions, and at Beber Camp, we teach the importance of recognizing and expressing appreciation for our community and blessings.

By living out these values, we can spread light and positivity, just as the Maccabees did long ago.

3. Musical Celebration: Enjoy Hanukkah songs each night. From traditional tunes to modern hits and more modern hits!
4. Join Beber's Virtual Celebration: Tune into Beber's social media for special Hanukkah candle lighting guests each night.
5. Community Engagement: Participate in local Hanukkah events. Check out activities at your JCC, Chabad, or synagogue.
6. Creative Cooking: Experiment with oil-based recipes, beyond latkes. Try donuts or explore these creative recipes.
7. Be a Light to Others: Perform acts of kindness, like giving tzedakah, writing letters to Israeli soldiers, or supporting community initiatives to assist others in need.
