Preserving Our Past, Inspiring Our Future: Cutting the Ribbon of the New Beber Camp History Room

At Beber Camp, every generation adds its own chapter to our story. Today, we celebrated a meaningful milestone as we officially opened the new Beber Camp History Room. A space dedicated to preserving our rich history, celebrating our community, and inspiring future generations of campers and staff.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony brought together both our youngest and oldest campers, symbolizing the connection between those just beginning their Beber journey and those preparing to leave their own lasting legacy. Cheryl Kaplan, who is celebrating an incredible 45 years at Beber Camp, had the honor of cutting the ribbon, marking the official opening of this special new space.

The History Room is a lasting legacy of the celebration of Beber's 50th anniversary and serves as a reminder that understanding our past helps shape our future. It tells the story of our community from the days predating Beber when this site was Burr Oaks Camp, through the founding of Beber Camp in the 1970s, and continues decade by decade, showcasing how our facilities, programs, traditions, and community have grown and evolved over the past five decades.

Visitors can explore dedicated exhibits highlighting many of the experiences that have shaped Beber, including Maccabiah, three-day trips, Jewish life, and the central role that music has played in camp culture. Each display features an interactive iPad filled with photos from every decade, allowing campers, staff, alumni, and visitors to scroll through thousands of memories and experience Beber's history in a dynamic and engaging way.

At the heart of the room is an interactive digital display that provides access to Beber's growing archive. As the collection continues to expand, visitors will be able to search for their own names or family members, explore historical photographs, and browse digital staff plaques, 5 and 10 year plaques, and Maccabiah banners from years gone by, creating an ever-growing connection between generations of the Beber community.

While the History Room celebrates where we've come from, it is also designed to become an active part of camp life. Beginning next summer, campers and staff will visit the space during cabin activities, participate in historical scavenger hunts, and offer a new space for late night adventures for cabins where they can explore the stories, traditions, and people who have helped make Beber what it is today.

The Beber Camp History Room reminds us that every camper, staff member, family, and supporter has contributed to our story. As we continue to build the future of Beber, we do so with a deep appreciation for the generations who came before us, and excitement for the many chapters still to come.
