I'm waitin'
Waitin' on a sunny day
Gonna chase the clouds away
Yeah, I'm waitin' on a sunny day

While the rain may have changed a few plans today, it certainly didn't slow camp down. One of the things that made me proud was seeing just how much continued despite the weather. Activities moved indoors, programs adapted, staff adjusted on the fly, and campers kept right on having fun. Camp is at its best when people focus on what they can do rather than what they can't, and today was a wonderful example of that.

Part of my day was spent with our CITs discussing Beber Camp's mission and the role they play in bringing it to life. It is easy to think of a mission statement as words on a website or something framed on a wall, but at camp it serves as a compass for the decisions we make every day. Our mission is to create an inclusive community that challenges and nurtures fun, individual and community-based growth, and Jewish identity in a safe, positive, and diverse environment with exceptional professional leadership. Every activity, every interaction, and every tradition should point us back to that purpose.

Our CIT program is an important part of that work. These young leaders are learning that camp leadership is about far more than supervising campers or running activities. It is about understanding why we do what we do and how our actions contribute to the kind of community we want to create. We talked about vision as well, not just where Beber Camp is today, but where we hope it will be tomorrow. The CITs sitting in that room earlier are a big part of that future. Many of them will become counselors, division leaders, and other camp role models and mentors in the years ahead. Investing in them now helps ensure not only their leadership skills, but that the values and traditions that make Beber special will continue for generations of campers to come.

As I looked around the room, I was reminded that one of the greatest responsibilities we have is not simply creating an incredible summer for today's campers, but preparing the next generation of leaders who will do the same long after we are gone. Someday, many of the campers creating memories across camp today will be the CITs sitting in that same room, wrestling with the same questions about leadership, community, and purpose. That cycle of growth, from camper to counselor to mentor, is one of the things that makes Beber Camp so special.

Our younger campers had an incredible day today too. A little rain has never stopped us from having fun, strengthening friendships, and living our Beber Belief of Spirit & Fun (more Beber Beliefs in an upcoming blog!). After all, when it’s raining all around, the sun is always shining at Beber Camp! Today, all of our hobbies ran as usual–just with a bit of splashing and a slightly more necessary shower before a delicious chicken and pasta bolognese dinner (preaccompanied by pancakes for breakfast and tacos for lunch!).

We closed out tonight with some fantastic (indoor) evening programs. Makor enjoyed a classic Night at the Races, where campers got to volunteer their counselors to tackle a series of demanding physical and mental challenges. Kesher battled it out at the Keshing Waves “beach” with a lip sync battle, while Ramot ended the night with a hilariously intriguing mystery program: “Who Stole the RamotChella Setlist?” Through a series of questions, clues, and investigations, campers worked together to uncover the culprit and recover the missing setlist. It was a fun-filled evening across camp, full of teamwork, laughter, and excitement as everyone wrapped up another great day.
