Here Comes the Sun

Here comes the sun, doo, dun, doo, doo
Here comes the sun, and I say
It's all right

Little darling, it's been a long cold lonely winter
Little darling, it feels like years since it's been here

Camp has a way of renewing itself each summer, the familiar becoming fresh again as laughter echoes off Lake Beulah and cabins fill with life. Today, after months of preparation and anticipation, Beber Camp is once again alive with possibility.

The joy on your campers’ faces as they arrived said it all. Whether they bounded off the bus with confidence or took slow, curious steps into something brand new, each one was met with warmth, excitement, and care. For returning campers, it was a heartfelt reunion. For first-timers, a brand new chapter began, one we can’t wait to help them write.

As I sit down to reflect on the first day, camp has quieted for the night (well, mostly). There’s still a hum of energy in the air, the kind that only comes from opening day. The weather was perfect, not too hot and plenty of sun, which meant we were able to enjoy the day to its fullest.

Our incredible staff showed up in every way today, welcoming, guiding, and making sure each camper began their summer with connection and care. The weeks of staff training have paid off, and I couldn’t be prouder of their commitment.

Campers spent the day unpacking, touring camp, signing up for hobbies, and meeting our health center team. They got fitted for lifejackets, learned new names, and started to feel at home. We also had a fantastic meal (chicken nuggets and fries) thanks to our hard-working kitchen crew! Shoutout to Abdiel and the entire food service team for keeping us well fed and energized!

This evening’s opening ceremony took place in the amphitheater. We sang camp classics, introduced the leadership team, and talked about what it means to take care of each other - to show courage, gratitude, kindness, and pride in our shared space.

If we haven’t met yet, I’m Michael Wax, and this is my 35th summer at Beber Camp. I started here in 1982 as a camper from Louisville, and now have the privilege of serving as Camp Director. Beber shaped me, raised my own children, and continues to inspire me every summer. Thank you for trusting us with your campers. We don’t take it lightly.

This summer, we’ll continue building our culture around five core Beber Beliefs:

  • Pride & Ownership
  • Spirit & Fun
  • Kindness & Gratitude
  • Health & Wellness
  • Jewish Values & Connection.

They’re more than words. They guide everything we do.

If you're curious to learn more about your camper’s counselors, check out this link. We hope it gives you a little window into the incredible team caring for your kids.

We’ll update this blog daily on our website and send out a push notification through the Campanion app when it's live. Make sure your notifications are turned on. It’s the best way to stay in the loop.

Here’s to what’s ahead! To new friendships, fresh adventures, and the little moments that become big memories.

With gratitude,
Michael

P.S. Congratulations to the following who answered correctly in my last blog that Tom Petty sang “Wildflowers.”

  • Megan Langer
  • Inbal Eshel
  • Patty Shalhav
  • Jenny Howard

Can you name the artist behind “Here Comes The Sun”? Email your answer to trivia@bebercamp.com, and I’ll give a shoutout in the next post.

P.P.S. Don’t forget about the Parent Summer Checklist! It’s our nudge to take care of you this summer while we take care of your kids. If you check something off or have a fun bucket list idea, email kim@bebercamp.com and we might feature it here.

Peace, Love, 3BC,

Michael
